Flexion-distraction technique is the most widely used approach to treat symptomatic lumbar disc injuries and associated leg pain. Flexion-distraction technique involves the use of a specialized table that gently provides axial distraction (traction), stretching the spine and surrounding musculature. The specialized table allows the Chiropractor to isolate the area of disc involvement while lightly providing traction, flexion, lateral bending, and circumduction to the spine. The combination of these movements alleviates pressure on the spinal nerves, relaxes the muscles of the low back, decreases inflammation, and aids in the retraction of a bulging disc.
